Exchanging a UK driving licence in Spain

British drivers moving to Spain are usually told the same thing: you can exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one without a test, as long as you do it within six months. Both halves need correcting. The six months is how long you may drive on the UK licence, not a deadline to exchange it. And there is one group that cannot exchange at all: people who got or renewed their UK licence while already living in Spain.

Visitors: six months

A non-resident may drive in Spain on a non-EU licence for six months from entry. British visitors need no International Driving Permit or translation. For American visitors, the licence must follow the international model, be in Spanish, come with an official translation, or be backed by an International Driving Permit. In practice the permit is the simplest way.

Residents with a UK licence

Once you are resident in Spain, a UK licence remains valid for six months. After that it is no longer valid for driving in Spain. Residence is defined as 185 days a year, and the traffic authority (DGT) asks for proof: a TIE, or for EU citizens the registration certificate. The white NIE certificate is not proof of residence.

Spain and the UK have applied a licence-exchange agreement provisionally since 16 March 2023. Under it:

  • you exchange without a theory or practical test;
  • you can apply as soon as you are resident;
  • an expired UK licence can still be exchanged if it was valid when you became resident;
  • you need a medical certificate from a Spanish driver medical centre and a DVLA check code.

The trap: a licence obtained while already resident

The DGT will not exchange a UK licence obtained in the UK while you were already legally resident in Spain, and the agreement requires newer licences to have been issued where the holder was resident. Someone who moved to Spain, kept a UK address and later took their test or got a new licence in the UK may find it cannot be exchanged. Whether a routine DVLA photocard renewal counts as "obtained" is not settled; ask the DGT before relying on it.

American and other licences

There is no exchange agreement with the United States. A US resident in Spain can drive on the US licence for six months after becoming resident, and then needs a Spanish licence through the normal theory and practical tests. The same applies to other countries without an agreement.

Irish and other EU licences

An Irish licence stays valid in Spain without exchange. But from the day you become resident, Spanish rules on validity apply: a car licence is valid for ten years, and five years from age 65. When it expires, you renew in Spain and receive a Spanish licence. Registering an EU licence with the DGT beforehand is voluntary.

Nothing changes yet under the new EU directive

The EU adopted a new driving licence directive in 2025, with longer validity periods. It only applies from 26 November 2029, so for anyone moving in 2026 the rules above stand.

Questions we get

Do I need a NIE for the exchange?
In practice your NIE is on your TIE or registration certificate, and you need it for the medical, the fee and the appointment. See the TIE card.

Can someone do the exchange for me?
The DGT accepts representation for the exchange, including a registered power of attorney, but the medical certificate is personal.

I live in Spain part of the year. Am I resident for the licence?
Only if you are resident under the 185-day definition and can prove it. Otherwise you are a visitor and the six-month visitor rule applies.

Why Buenaley?

Buenaley is a Spanish law firm working with international clients. For people moving to Spain there are two things we take off your hands, in this order.

The first is the NIE and the residence document behind it, which the DGT asks for. We arrange it through our NIE service, including the TIE appointment.

The second is the home: buying, registering and keeping the annual obligations in order.

  • NIE and TIE, from abroad or in Spain
  • Proof of residence the DGT accepts
  • A check on whether your UK licence can be exchanged
  • Purchase support for your Spanish home
  • Annual property taxes kept in order
