Can you apply for a NIE number online?

It is one of the most common questions about the Spanish NIE: can the number simply be applied for online? The short answer is that part of the process can be handled digitally, but Spain has no general online portal where a foreigner submits a NIE application themselves. This article sets out what is and is not possible online, and which route comes closest to a fully digital application.

Is there an official online NIE portal?

Not in the sense most people mean. Anyone applying for a NIE themselves will reach a step that requires someone to appear in person: at a police station or immigration office in Spain, or at a Spanish consulate abroad. There is a digital side, but it sits mostly in the preparation.

What can be arranged online:

  • Downloading and completing form EX-15
  • Reserving an appointment through the booking system
  • Preparing the fee payment via modelo 790, código 012

What cannot be done independently online is the submission itself. That requires appearing in person, or authorising someone to do it on your behalf.

Why an application by authorised representative feels fully online

This is the exception that makes the difference. Spanish law allows you to authorise someone to submit the application for you. When you do, the physical step moves to your representative and only the digital part remains on your side.

In practice it looks like this:

  1. You verify your identity online, using your passport and a selfie through a secure platform.
  2. You sign the power of attorney digitally.
  3. A lawyer in Spain submits the application to the competent authority.
  4. You receive the assigned number by email.

From your perspective the application is online from start to finish. The visit to the counter still exists, but your representative makes it.

Online or in person: the trade off

Both routes produce exactly the same NIE. The choice is about cost, time and certainty.

Applying yourself is cheaper. The official fee is around €9,84. If you live in Spain, manage reasonable Spanish and are not working to a deadline, doing it yourself is perfectly sensible. That is, frankly, the better choice in that situation.

Using a representative is faster and more predictable. The bottleneck in a self-service application is rarely the form; it is appointment availability. In busy provinces this can run to weeks, and a consular application from your home country carries its own processing time. If you need the number before a notary date or a job start, that is a real risk.

What to check with online providers

A market of intermediaries has grown up around the NIE. A few things worth checking before committing:

  • Who actually submits the application? A lawyer or gestor registered in Spain is not the same as a service that forwards your form.
  • What is included in the price? Ask whether the government fee, the notarial cost of the power of attorney and any legalisation are covered.
  • Is an outcome being promised? Nobody can guarantee that the authorities will assign a number within a fixed time. What a firm can stand behind is a correct and complete submission.
