How long does it take to get a NIE number, and can it be faster?

A completion date, a job starting, a bank account that has to open: sometimes the NIE becomes urgent. The natural question is whether there is an express procedure. The honest answer is that no official fast track with a guaranteed turnaround exists. Even so, there is a real difference in speed, and it sits somewhere other than most people expect.

Where the delay actually sits

The application is not the slow part. Form EX-15 takes fifteen minutes, and assessment by the Spanish authorities does not normally take months.

The delay is almost always in two places:

1. The appointment. Whether at an Oficina de Extranjería in Spain or at a consulate abroad, the cita previa is the bottleneck. In busy provinces and periods, slots can be booked out weeks ahead.
2. Incomplete files. A missing supporting document or a wrongly completed field means starting again, including a new appointment. In practice that costs the most time of all.

Anyone wanting speed should therefore not look for an express counter, but for a way around these two obstacles.

What genuinely helps

Skipping the appointment through power of attorney. Authorising a lawyer in Spain shifts the physical step to someone who is there routinely and is not dependent on the same public booking system. In practice this is the biggest single gain.

Getting the file right first time. Every correction afterwards costs a round. Having the supporting document checked against what the competent office expects often saves more than any express measure could.

Starting early. Unexciting, but true. With a purchase it is wise to start the NIE application once the reservation is agreed, not once the notary sets a date.

What does not help

• Paying for a faster government appointment. No such thing exists. Providers suggesting otherwise are selling something else.
• Submitting several applications at once. This slows things down rather than speeding them up.
• A guaranteed turnaround. No party can guarantee processing time at the Spanish authorities. What can be committed to is the speed of submission and the completeness of the file.

What is realistic?

With a complete application through a representative, a few weeks is realistic, with the weight sitting in the authorities' handling time rather than in waiting for a slot in a diary.
